The story of the place

On the site of the fortress, King Ladislaus I built a fortified monastery at the end of the 11th century, and the fortress became one of the few bastioned fortresses in Romania. The princely palace, begun in 1619 by Gabriel Bethlen to designs by Giacomo Resti, was completed in 1650; the defensive moat could be filled with thermal water from the Peța stream.
